These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern the rental of vehicles and related services (transfers, chauffeur services, driving permit assistance) provided by King Car Rental (“we”, “us”, “our”) to customers (“you”, “the renter”) in Zanzibar, Tanzania. By booking with us, you agree to these Terms.

1. Who we are

King Car Rental is a car and scooter hire company based in Zanzibar, offering self-drive rentals, chauffeur and transfer services, and airport transfers. You can reach us by email at info@kingcarrental.com, by WhatsApp at +255 740 354 550, or via the contact form on our website.

2. Bookings and reservations

You can request a booking through our website, by WhatsApp, or by contacting us directly. A booking is confirmed once we reply confirming vehicle availability for your chosen dates. No online payment is required to reserve a vehicle.

3. Payment

We accept cash only (USD or Tanzanian Shillings), paid in person when you collect your vehicle — “Rent Now, Pay When You Arrive.” We do not accept card payments or bank transfers, and no payment is taken to hold a reservation.

4. Cancellations and changes

You may cancel or change your booking free of charge at any time before pickup. Since no payment is taken in advance, there is nothing to refund — simply let us know by WhatsApp or email as soon as possible so we can release the vehicle for other customers.

5. Driver eligibility and required documents

To rent a vehicle, the primary driver must be at least 18 years old and present the following at pickup:

  • A valid driver’s licence (international licences are accepted);
  • A passport or other government-issued photo ID.

The person renting the vehicle must be present in person to provide these documents and agree to the rental.

6. Zanzibar Tourist Driving Permit

Tanzanian law requires all foreign visitors to hold a Zanzibar Tourist Driving Permit to legally drive on the island, even if you already hold a valid international driving licence. The permit currently costs $20, set by the local government office. We assist all customers in obtaining this permit — we just need a photo of your driver’s licence, your passport, and a passport-size photo.

7. Additional drivers

You may add one or more additional drivers to your rental. Each additional driver must meet the same requirements as the primary driver (valid licence, government ID, minimum age 18) and must obtain their own Zanzibar Tourist Driving Permit. A small additional fee may apply per extra driver to cover insurance and administrative costs, which will be confirmed at booking or pickup.

8. Vehicle use and your responsibilities

While the vehicle is in your care, you agree to:

  • Use it only for lawful purposes and in accordance with Tanzanian and Zanzibar traffic laws;
  • Not use the vehicle for racing, off-road driving, towing, or any use it was not designed for;
  • Not sub-let or re-hire the vehicle to a third party;
  • Take reasonable care of the vehicle and report any accident, breakdown, theft or damage to us as soon as possible;
  • Be responsible for any traffic fines or penalties incurred during your rental period.

9. Insurance and roadside assistance

All our vehicles come with basic insurance coverage. Roadside assistance is available during your rental — contact us by WhatsApp or phone if you experience a breakdown or need help on the road. The renter may be held responsible for damage resulting from negligent, reckless or unauthorised use of the vehicle, to the extent not covered by insurance.

10. Fuel and vehicle condition

Vehicles are provided with a full tank and should be returned with the same fuel level, unless otherwise agreed. Please inspect the vehicle at pickup and let us know of any existing damage so it can be noted before your rental begins.

11. Delivery, pickup and drop-off

Where available, we can arrange delivery of your vehicle to your hotel, villa or the airport, and collection at the end of your rental, at no extra cost. Pickup and drop-off times and locations are agreed with you when your booking is confirmed.

12. Late returns

If you need to extend your rental, please let us know as early as possible so we can confirm the vehicle’s availability. Returning the vehicle significantly later than agreed without notice may incur an additional charge for the extra time.

13. Limitation of liability

We make every effort to keep our fleet well-maintained and safe. To the extent permitted by law, King Car Rental is not liable for indirect losses, delays, or inconvenience arising from mechanical issues, weather, road conditions, or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control, beyond arranging a suitable replacement vehicle or roadside assistance where possible.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Tanzania and Zanzibar. Any disputes will first be handled through direct discussion between you and King Car Rental in good faith.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in our services or local regulations (such as driving permit fees). Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised “last updated” date.

16. Contact us
